Gritli Faulhaber, Chronic State of Becoming (2), 2021 (detail)

Contrary to the assumption that painting presupposes a secret or specialized knowledge and can only be explained by competent experts, Gritli Faulhaber (born in Freiburg im Breisgau, lives and works in Zurich) is interested in the ambivalence of such outdated connotations and the overcoming of boundaries within the still reactionary medium. Partly primed, partly not, partly abstract, partly figurative, Gritli Faulhaber’s works present provisional constellations that both question the iconographic meaning of images in their historical context and address their potential to dissolve into plain texture and form. Faulhaber’s practice is unique for its refusal to follow an organic developmental order, she works sequentially, producing bodies of work as individual, formally and conceptually distinct series with no logical progression. With her work, she playfully deconstructs the clichés of a history of painting with strong gendered connotations and reflects on art historical and sociocultural role models of the genre.

Gritli Faulhaber is a recipient of the Swiss Art Award (2022), the Werkstipendium of the City of Zurich (2022) and a half-year residency at the Cité international des Arts in Paris (2021).

Upcoming exhibitions include Theta Gallery, New York City (November  2022) and Istituto Svizzero, Milano (2023). Recent shows include: “La réforme de Pooky”, Kunsthalle Fribourg (2022); “Make room in your mouth”, WAF Galerie Vienna (2022); PROVENCE Magazine Artgenève (2022).
