Rory Rowan (born in Belfast) is a lecturer and researcher in the Political Geography Research Unit at the University of Zurich’s Department of Geography. His research crosses the fields of political geography, philosophy and cultural criticism and his most recent work focuses on the political and philosophical dimensions of the Anthropocene, Earth system governance and contemporary developments in extra- planetary geographies. He is co-author with Claudio Minca of On Schmitt and Space, a book focused on the spatial thought of the controversial German legal and political thinker Carl Schmitt that built on Rowan’s PhD thesis at Royal Holloway, University of London. He regularly contributes writing on politics, geography, philosophy and cultural criticism to a number of academic and non-academic publications including e-Flux, Society and Space, Mute, Progress in Human Geography, Opening Times Art Commission and Political Geography. He frequently works with artists and has contributed writing to exhibitions in New York, London, Milan and Sao Paolo and been a guest speaker at arts institutions across Europe.
