Leila Moon’s collective influences, intercultural experiences, and connection to art and exhibitions have shaped much of her relationship to sound, music, and creativity. In this session, the Basel-based DJ and producer will introduce her music, work, and interests while discussing her engagement with other practices, such as theater, installations, and workshops. Reflecting about her methods and work processes, Moon will discuss her current work in progress, connected to a recent residency in Algeria, where she investigated the roots, traditions, and transformations of Medahatesمداحات , a popular, women-led musical genre from North Africa.
Leila Moon is DJ, producer, resident at @radioalhara, and coach based in Basel. Specializing in Drum and Bass, UK Bass, and breaks, her sets are a captivating blend of genres that keep audiences hooked. Inspired by the rhythmic nuances of North African musical traditions such as Raï and other genres like Gnawa and Mahraganat, Moon infuses her mixes with a magnetic blend of bass and rhythms. With a style that resonates and evolves, she’s a humble yet powerful presence behind the decks, leaving a lasting impact on anyone who encounters her eclectic music style, which is a culmination of her collective influences and intercultural experiences.
