Daniel Karrer

Artist, external mentor

After a BA in Art and Education at the FHNW Academy of Art and Design (HGK) in Basel and a guest semester in painting at the Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst Leipzig (D), Daniel Karrer  completed his MA in Fine Arts at the HGK in 2010.

Daniel Karrer mainly works in the broad field of painting. Between the realm of digital imagery and the pictorial traditions of the past centuries, Karrer’s paintings reflect the current visual memory. This memory is shaped both by past pictorial conceptions and by the current visual aesthetics, which struggle, among visual aspects, with the contradictions of a medium that simultaneously offers infinite dimensions and unavoidable flatness. Karrer has been painting on and behind glass since 2016.

Daniel Karrer has participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions in museums and institutions, including STRABAG Artlounge in Vienna (AT); Museum Langmatt Baden (CH); P100 Project Space by Trippen Berlin (D); Kunsthalle Winterthur (CH); Kunstmuseum Olten (CH); Cultuurcentrum Hasselt (BE); Art Rotterdam) (NL=; Herrmann Germann Contemporary, Zurich (CH); Kunsthalle Basel (CH); sic! Raum für Kunst, Luzern (CH); Aargauer Kunsthaus, Aarau (CH). In 2015 he was awarded a Cahier d’Artiste of Pro Helvetia; in 2016 he was a resident at the Atelier Mondial of the Christoph Merian Foundation in Berlin. In 2017 he received the Strabag Art Award.
