Esther Hunziker

Lecturer bachelor

Digital media, digital publishing

Since 1993, Esther Hunziker works across diverse fields of media art — from early experimental videos to deconstructed online narratives, audiovisual animations, interactive installations and AI-generated images. Emerging from the in-between, her practice explores spaces where fragments collide and dissolve, identities shift and murmur, rewritten from latent spaces of forgotten data. Hunziker’s work is born from tension: construction and deconstruction, noise and silence, order and its collapse. The moment when ambiguity unfolds, before it becomes memory — like data dreams, charged with both excitement and unease. From these unstable moments, Esther Hunziker shapes her own narrations and digital creatures that haunt the fringes of our media world.

Continuously probing digital tools, she founded electrfd.net in 2023, a new independent publishing house for digital artists’ books. Her editorial programme harnesses the audiovisual potential of e-publications to craft the unprintable into books that are not only electronic but blissfully electrifying.

Esther Hunziker’s works have been shown in numerous solo and group exhibitions in museums and institutions, including solo exhibitions at Kunsthaus Baselland, CH; HEK House of Electronic Arts, Basel CH, — group exhibitions and screenings at Cairo Video Festival, EG; Pinakothek der Moderne, Munic, DE; Novartis Pavillon Basel, CH; MU Hybrid Art House, Eindhoven, NL; Kaliningrad Museum of Fine Arts, RU; Shenzhen New Media Art Festival, CN; Aargauer Kunsthaus Aarau, CH; Gallery Futuro, Nizhnij Novgorod, RU; Kunsthalle Basel, CH; Kunstraum LLC, New York, US; EMAF European Media Art Festival, Kunsthalle Osnabrück, DE; Europäische Kunstakademie Trier, DE; FILE Electronic Language International Festival, Sao Paulo, BR; a. o.

In addition to studio residencies in Bratislava, Helsinki, Edinburgh, Chongqing and Berlin, Hunziker has received various awards and prizes, including the Swiss Media Art ‘PAX Art Award’ (2024), the Basel Media Art Prize (2017,2024), Werkbeitrag Kunstkredit Basel-Stadt (2004, 1996), Viper Swiss Award (2004), 1. Prize for digital literature from dtv & t-online (2004).
