GENEVIÈVE MORIN

Artist, external mentor

Originally from Montréal, Geneviève Morin came to Switzerland in 1989 through the artist exchange Atelier Mondial. She has been living in Basel since 1991 and currently works in Hégenheim. She holds a BA degree from the University of Québec in Montréal (UQUAM).

Geneviève Morin’s works can be placed in the broad field of oil and aquarelle painting, drawing and elements of analog printing techniques. She uses large formats to realize her vivid and intense paintings. Her inspiration is taken from a fundus of her own photography, collected footage and imagery, video stills or fragments of her imagination and dreams. In her work the visual and emotional reality of a dream and the subconscious are valued equally to daily impressions. Experiences from first and second-hand, the read, the remembered, the political, the public, the personal, and psychological are tools she uses to break the barriers between the physical reality and the psychological, spiritual, dreamlike reality portrayed in her work. A radical democracy is created where everything imaginable is taken into account and given the same weight. Emerging into this state of vulnerability and rawness, visual layers are combined with a sensitive and never aestheticizing artistic voice, creating a new archaic reality.

Geneviève Morin’s work has been shown in numerous solo and group exhibitions, including OOO Object Oriented Ontology, Kunsthalle Basel (2017), Kunsthaus Baselland; Intense Impression, Kunsthalle Palazzo Liestal (2020); Esszimmer, Cologne (2018); Dem Leben Zuhören wie es spricht, FABRIKculture, Hégenheim (2016 ); Ausstellungsraum Klingental, Basel; Clair-obscur, Galerie Lichtfeld, Basel (2019); Chimère, Galerie Karin Sutter, Basel (2014); Galerie Clark, Montréal; Bienale du dessin, de l’estampe et du papier du Québec , Alma, Québec (1997).
