Lena Maria Thüring

Lecturer bachelor and master

Forum Kunst, artistic mentoring

Lena Maria Thüring lives and works in Zurich and Basel. Thüring completed a degree in photography in 2007 and a Master of Arts in Fine Arts at the Zurich University of the Arts (ZHdK) in 2014. From 2014 to 2017, she was a jury member of the Audiovision and Multimedia Committee, BS/BL, Basel.

At the heart of Thüring’s artistic exploration is her interest in socio-political realities and their impact on society. Thüring uses different media such as video, sound, photography, performance or installation to question social systems and their underlying constructions. Spoken language is the central medium through which she makes processes of history production visible and negotiates issues of linguistic articulation, collective and personal memories, social structures, gender and identity.

Lena Maria Thüring’s works have been shown in numerous solo and group exhibitions in museums and institutions, including solo exhibitions at Kunsthaus Baselland, Museum für Gegenwartskunst Basel, Kunstmuseum im PROGR Bern, group exhibitions and screenings at Kunsthalle Basel, Haus der Kulturen Berlin, Nationalmuseum Reina Sofia in Madrid and Palais de Tokyo in Paris. In addition to numerous prizes such as the Swiss Art Award (2008), Prize of the Kiefer Hablitzel Foundation (2009, 2011), work contributions from the City of Zurich (2011, 2016), the Manorkunstpreis Basel (2013) and an art on building project at the Swiss Embassy in Seoul (2018), Thüring spent studio residencies in Paris (2009) and New York (2010).
