Mariana Tilly

PhD, research

Mariana Tilly is a Portuguese artist and researcher based in Basel and holds a BFA in painting from the Fine Arts University of Lisbon and an MA from the Institute Art Gender Nature HGK Basel FHNW. She works on the subjects of decolonization and migration flows as consequences of geopolitical trauma (PALOP, Portugal, Switzerland) and the impact of visual representation in histories of neglect.

Currently, she is a PhD candidate at the MAKE/SENSE program of the Basel Academy of Art and Design FHNW and Linz University of the Arts. Her PhD project CAPACIDADES (25 Abril/6 de Maio) is supported by a Doc.CH grant from the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF). The project proposes an exploration into the histories of Portuguese colonialism, migration, the dictatorial regime Estado Novo (1933 – 1974) and the way images and film shaped propaganda and public perception of colonial conflict and national identity.
