Cringe Care ist der erste und letzte Abend in einer Reihe von Veranstaltungen, die sich mit der Politik des Fremdschämens befassen. Cringe Care bietet eine umarmende Plattform des genussvollen Unbehagens und der verletzlichen Lächerlichkeit. Cringe Care ist eine Open-Mic-Night und bietet euch eine Plattform, eure Angst zu überwinden und die Bühne mit allem zu bespielen, was euch bisher zu peinlich war. Cringe Care verlangt ein verantwortungsvolles Publikum, das bereit ist, seinen Widerstand gegen das Unprofessionelle, das Unverständliche oder das Peinliche zu hinterfragen und sich dem kritischen Potenzial der Scham-Solidarität zu öffnen.

Dies ist ein Aufruf an alle – naive Expert:innen und versierte Lai:innen – die das klammheimliche Bedürfnis haben eine Nummer zu zeigen, aber Scheu vor einem urteilenden Publikum oder professionalisierten Standards haben. Amateur:nnen, Dissident:innen, Avant-Gardist:innen: zeigt uns wie, und wofür euer Herz dann doch auch noch schlägt. Wir suchen Qualität ausserhalb der Virtuosität. Jegliche Formate sind willkommen: Wir stellen eine Bühne und ein Mikrofon, alles Andere kommt von euch. Sorge ist in unserer krisengeschüttelten Zeit zum grossen Heilsversprechen geworden. Immer mehr wird von Kunst einen aktiven Einsatz für ein sorgendes Tun erwartet. Wie kann Sorge für und mit anderen künstlerisch durchgearbeitet werden? Wie können wir Heilsvorstellungen ablehnen und gleichzeitig an Rechenschaft und Sorge festhalten? Wie kann sie sich für mehr-als-menschliche Anliegen öffnen? Und: Wie lässt sich Sorge in die Produktionsbedingungen und Strukturen des Kunstbetriebes einschreiben, damit die aktuellen Verhältnisse gerechter gestaltet werden?

Sowohl das Gespräch zwischen Sascia Bailer, Kuratorin und Wissenschaftlerin, Helen V. Pritchard, Leiterin Forschung am IXDM HGK Basel FHWN und queer Lovetheoretikerin, und Yvonne Volkart, Leiterin Forschung am Institut Kunst Gender Natur HGK Basel FHNW und Autorin, als auch die Storytelling-Performance der Künstlerin und PhD-Kandidatin Mariana Tilly (mit Freund:innen) stellen sich den brennenden Fragen und Ambivalenzen rund um Fürsorge und vertiefen sie gemeinsam mit dem Publikum.

Dr. Sascia Bailer is a feminist researcher, writer and curator working at the intersection of care, gender, and socially engaged art. In her doctoral dissertation she investigated the ambivalent relationship between curating and care, and formulated propositions towards caring infrastructures within the arts. In 2019/2020 she initiated a participatory curatorial programming on care as the Artistic Director of M.1 Arthur Boskamp-Stiftung in rural Northern Germany. Together with Didem Yazici, she curated the exhibition Mothers*, Warriors, and Poets: Care as Resistance (2023) at StadtPalais Stuttgart. She is the author of the article Care for Caregivers. Curating against the Care Crisis (in: Curating with Care, Routledge, 2023) and of the booklet Curating, Care, and Corona (Verlag der Arthur Boskamp Stiftung, 2020). She co-edited the anthology Letters to Joan (2020, HKW) and the artist monographies Re-Assembling Motherhood(s): On Radical Care and Collective Art as Feminist Practices by Maternal Fantasies (Onomatopee, 2021), and What We Could Have Become: On Queer Feminist Filmmaking by Malu Blume (Onomatopee, 2021). She regularly writes for Monopol magazine on art, care, and gender justice. She has worked internationally within the arts, including MoMA PS1, Haus der Kulturen der Welt, and Vera List Center for Art and Politics.

Prof. Dr. Helen V. Pritchard is an artist-designer, geographer, activist and queer love theorist. They organise with The Institute for Technology in the Public Interest (TITiPI), and Regenerative Energy Communities, working at the intersections of trans*feminist radical kinship, humuspunk digital infra, queer energy practice and agro-ecology to uphold a politics of queer survival and practice––ᘒ ፨ ᚼ ◊ ᗶ + ^ + Æ (QUEERING DAMAGE). They are a practitioner of Queering Damage (2018), co-editor of the manual Infrastructural Interactions: Survival, Resistance and Radical Care (2022), Plants By Numbers: Art, Computation and Queer Feminist Technoscience and the Future Media Series for Goldsmiths Press. Helen Helen V. Pritchard is Professor and Head of Research at IXDM, Basel Academy of Art and Design FHNW.  
 
Dr. Yvonne Volkart is head of research and lecturer of art theory and cultural media studies at the Institute Art Gender Nature HGK Basel FHNW. There, she directs the SNSF-research project Plants_Intelligence. Learning Like a Plant (2022 – 2025), and Ecodata–Ecomedia–Ecoaesthetics. The Role and Significance of New Media, Technologies and Technoscientific Methods in the Arts for the Perception and Awareness of the Ecological (2017 – 2021). She also holds a teaching position at the Master of Arts in Art Education, Zurich University of the Arts. In collaboration with Sabine Himmelsbach and Karin Ohlenschläger she curated the exhibition and book project Eco-Visionaries. Art, Architecture and New Media After the Anthropocene (Hatje Cantz 2018, ed. by Pedro Gadanho), and Ecomedia. Ecological Practices in Today’s Art (Ostfildern: Hatje Cantz, 2007). She is the author of Technologies of Care. From Sensing Technologies to an Aesthetics of Attention in a More-than-Human World, Zürich: diaphanes 2023. 
 
Mariana Tilly is an artist based between Lisbon and Basel. She holds a BFA in Painting from the Faculty of Fine-Arts of Lisbon, an MA from Institute Art Gender Nature HGK Basel FHNW (2021) where she is currently a PhD Candidate.

Was bedeutet es lebendig zu sein? Ich welchen Formen kann Leben erscheinen? Die Künstlerin und Wissenschaftlerin Monica Ursina Jäger versammelt im Rahmen von Friday Beyeler verschiedene Stimmen aus Kunst, Natur und Wissenschaft, um über unterschiedliche Formen des Lebendigseins zu reflektieren. Phyto Futures lädt ein, dem Geflüster von Mikroorganismen zu lauschen, in die Rhythmen von Wäldern einzutauchen und neue Ideen zu entwickeln, den Planeten zusammen mit Pflanzen, Mikrooganismen und Mineralien zu bewohnen. Das Programm umfasst ein Filmscreening von Liquid Time – An Earthly Archive of Weathering Thoughts, ein Gespräch mit Lucia Pietroiusti, Leiterin des Bereichs Ecologies bei den Serpentine Galleries in London, die Sound-Performance Sonic Understories von Michael Bucher, Multiinstrumentalist und Komponist, und eine Präsentation der Geobiologin Lena Bakker. Der Abend wird von Damian Christinger, Kurator und Publizist, moderiert.

Monica Ursina Jägers künstlerisches Schaffen ist durch eine multidisziplinäre Reflexion von Raum-, Landschafts- und Architekturkonzepten geprägt. Mittels Zeichnung, Collage, Installation und Video untersucht sie die vielschichtigen Beziehungen in Ökosystemen sowie Prozesse der Transformation, Arrangement und Übersetzung, indem sie die Grenzen zwischen künstlerischer und wissenschaftlicher Wissensproduktion aufhebt. Monica Ursina Jäger ist permanentes Fakultätsmitglied am IUNR Institut für Umwelt und Natürliche Ressourcen der Zürcher Hochschule für Angewandte Wissenschaften ZHAW.

Cringe Care is the first and possibly last evening in a series of events focusing on the politics of cringe. Cringe Care offers an embracing platform of joyful discomfort and exhilerating vulnerability for all who commit to the naivety of facing shame and pleasure together outside of quality controlled virtuosity. Cringe Care takes the format of an open-mic night and offers a platform to Amateurs, dissidents and avanguardists who are ready to overcome fear and shamelessly take the stage in a form they have previously been too shy to share. It also offers an active audience-experience to those who would like to challenge their resistance to the unprofessional, the unintelligible or the painfully vulnerable and are willing to open up to the critical potential of shame-solidarity and the transformative power of suspended judgement and the acknowledgement of brilliance within the ungaugable.

In our crisis-ridden times, care has become the great promise of salvation. Increasingly, art is also expected to make an active commitment to caring. How can care for and with others be explored artistically? How can we reject notions of salvation and hold onto both accountability and care? How can it open itself up to more-than-human concerns? And: How can care be inscribed into the conditions of production and (infra-)structures of the art sector so that current conditions can be made just? Both, the discussion between Sascia Bailer, curator, and researcher, Helen V. Pritchard, queer love theorist and Head of Research at Institute of Experimental Design and Media Cultures HGK Basel FHNW, and Yvonne Volkart, Head of Research at Institute Art Gender Nature HGK Basel FHNW and author, as well as the story-telling performance by artist and PhD candidate Mariana Tilly (and friends), address the burning questions and ambivalences surrounding care and explore them in depth together with the audience.

What does it mean to be alive? And in what shape and form can life appear? As part of Friday Beyeler, artist and researcher Monica Ursina Jäger gathers voices from nature, art and science to reflect on different forms of being alive. Phyto Futures is an invitation to listen to microbial chatter, to tune in to the rhythms of forests and build new ideas of inhabiting the planet with plants, microorganisms and minerals. The program includes a film screening of Liquid Time – An Earthly Archive of Weathering Thoughts, a conversation with Lucia Pietroiusti, Head of Ecologies at Serpentine Galleries in London, the sound performance Sonic Understories by Michael Bucher, multiinstrumentalist and composer, and a presentation by geobiologist Lena Bakker. The evening is moderated by curator and publicist Damian Christinger.

Working with drawing, collage, installation and video, Monica Ursina Jäger’s practice unfolds through a multidisciplinary reflection on concepts of space, landscape, and architecture that investigate the manyfold relationships in ecosystems. She scrutinizes processes of transformation, re-arrangement and mediation by unfixing the boundaries between artistic and scientific knowledge production. Jäger is a permanent faculty member at the Institute of Natural Resource Sciences IUNR, Zurich University of Applied Sciences ZHAW.
