Born to a multi-racial household, Brandy Butler (born in Reading, Pennslyvania, lives and works in Zurich) is a performer, singer and activist. They have worked for several local and national organizations consulting on diversity, equity and inclusion projects. Their passion is change, and the instability that it brings. Believing firmly that change is necessary for growth, they are committed to supporting such opportunities whether through creative, pedagogical or community based projects (or some intersection thereof).
Besides being an esteemed activist, Brandy Butler is also one of the most highly respected musicians in the Swiss music scene. Over the last 20 years, they have made appearances with almost every major Swiss musician, including Sophie Hunger, Erika Stucky, Sina, Stress, Steff La Cheffe, Phenomden, and Philip Funkhauser, to name just a few.
Since 2015, Butler’s career has expanded immensely. Their current professional practice includes being a resident guest performer at Theater Neumarkt, Zurich (2019 to present). They are also the creator and host of Drag Story Time at Tanzhaus Zürich, since 2019. A playful program showing children drag and gender diversity, Drag Story Time aims at teaching children empathy and inclusion and has become a cult favorite of kids and parents alike.
Brandy Butler graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Jazz Performance in 2001. In 2010, they completed their Master’s degree in Vocal Musik Pädagogik, and a complimentary certification in Elementary Music in 2022.
