R. Sebastian Schachinger (born in Freiburg im Breisgau, lives and works in Basel and Vienna) offers a subjective gaze on philosophical concepts such as time and the social constructs usually attached to it. In his work, he explores the tension between objects and individual memory through mediums ranging from large-scale installation, sculpture, sound and performance. He frequently engages duality and cyclical repetition as a formal quality in his practice. In his performances, he uses his body almost like a ready-made which he puts into action by means of specific tasks and sometimes in relation to his sculptures. Within the varied scope of his artistic practice, he considers performance, mostly unrehearsed and spontaneous, as a practice of learning about time, labor and space through experiencing it.
R. Sebastian Schachinger graduated with a BFA from Institute Art Gender Nature HGK Basel FHNW. His work has been shown in various group exhibitions, including Kunsthalle Basel; Kunsthalle Palazzo, Liestal; Kunsthaus Baselland; WAF Galerie, Vienna. His first institutional solo exhibition was held in Kunsthaus Baselland this year. 2022 he was awarded the Kiefer | Hablitzel Göhner Prize. Since February 2023, Sebastian R. Schachinger is running and curating the project space RUF in Vienna.
