For Art Taaalkssss artists Axelle Stiefel and Guillaume Maraud discuss Anti-PhD, a recent project they conceived for the project space 1.1 in Basel (9 November – 4 December 2019). Resisting the traditional format of a group exhibition, they suggest an exhibition as a set of relations that are not yet established, referring to curatorial and artistic research rather than to an abstract category or entity, their project focuses on artists themselves, their lives and their modes of investigation. The result is based on relational collaboration and self-organization and uses theory in a non-orthodox and non-academic way.
Axelle Stiefel is a Franco-Swiss artist based in Basel. Her work is performative and cinematic. She conducts research independently, following on a line called the red thread, consisting of a metaphorology of textile. She questions the concepts of continuity and permanence. A visiting lecturer at ENSAPC, Paris-Cergy, her work has been shown at Forde, Geneva; Corner College, Zurich; Wiels, Brussels; Kunstraum Niederösterreich, Vienna; Kunst Raum Riehen, Basel.
Guillaume Maraud is an artist based in Paris and a member of ACTH, a research program at ENSBA Lyon. He founded 23102015, a fund dedicated to supporting critically engaged art practices and a research platform on art, politics, and economy. Recent presentations of his work include Fondation d’Entreprise Ricard, Paris; Édouard Montassut, Paris; Forde, Geneva; Indipendenza, Rome; Bel Ami, Los Angeles; SUPER, Berlin; and Queer Thoughts, New York.
